The interview process

  1. 1

    Online application

    Official

Apply online with a CV/resume (no cover letter required per IMC's APAC recruitment page; IMC's Sydney profile on GradConnection also lists an academic transcript and cover letter, and the APAC/HK internship pages ask for CV plus academic transcripts). Internships are limited to penultimate-year students; US ads allow one application per role per year and IMC recommends applying for one role. Rejected applicants can reapply in the next recruitment season. EU describes this as step 1 of five (application and review); US/HK pages list three steps (application, assessment, interviews); APAC lists four (application, assessments, interview, job offer).

  2. 2

    Eligibility check (APAC)

    Official

In Sydney/APAC, applicants must meet basic criteria such as working rights and academic benchmarks (minimum Distinction average; High Distinction or equivalent listed on current AP/HK internship pages) before or alongside the online assessment.

  3. 3

    Online assessment(s)

    Official

Official: assessments vary by role; for most positions IMC sends an aptitude assessment with test links and a few practice questions beforehand. Some trading, technology and business roles also get a technical home assignment (Googling/open source allowed, work must be your own). AP/HK internship pages say the assessments test analytical reasoning, logical thinking and real-world problem solving. In APAC the process always starts with an online assessment before any interview. Your recruiter explains the format in advance.

  4. 4

Online assessment - reported test types

    Reported

Reported, not confirmed on IMC's careers pages: in a 2021 case submission IMC said it replaced its generic aptitude test with BrainsFirst's NeurOlympics brain-based assessment games and moved the assessment before CV screening (may have changed since). Sydney candidate reviews mention an online aptitude test, an online coding test (technology roles), recorded video interviews, and maths/probability questions. Graduate Trader ads link to an IMC trading interview preparation guide (PDF) that we could not open, so we have not checked it.

  5. 5

    Recruiter / behavioural interview

    Official

APAC: a campus recruiter calls you by phone or Zoom to learn about you and your experience and to tell you about the role and life at IMC. EU: first-round interview(s) cover introductions, why you applied, how you see the role, and your relevant experience and skills.

  6. 6

    Technical interview(s)

    Official

First-round technical interview with a trader, engineer or quant researcher, depending on the stream, where you work together on a specific problem. IMC says it cares about your approach (how you break down unfamiliar problems, take hints, and think under uncertainty) more than the right answer; AP/HK pages call these conversations, not puzzles.

  7. 7

    Final round / assessment day

    Official

Sydney: in-office final-round assessment day with a mix of technical and behavioural stations. EU: final round may be several interview stations with different stakeholders. IMC books travel and accommodation for onsite assessment days. Candidate reviews (reported) describe trading games at the final round.

  8. 8

IMC reviews the application, assessment and interview feedback together and aims to give feedback within a couple of days (EU page). Graduate Traineeship start dates are Feb and Aug (Feb/Mar and Aug/Sep on the US page): a 6-week global Trading School, then 6-14 weeks of local traineeship.

  9. 9

    Fast-track routes via insight programmes

    Official

Standout Launchpad participants are fast-tracked: EU into the internship programme, Sydney to a 2027/28 Summer Internship offer (earlier Sydney cohorts went to the internship final-interview stage). Accelerate (EU) fast-tracks strong performers to graduate opportunities.
